Revenge is a dish best served cold

The Lighthouse

“Revenge is a dish best served cold” is a proverb about revenge postponed and served after time has passed. Jago Tamlyn invokes it ironically while denying that he killed Nathan Oliver: “They say revenge is a dish best served cold, but not that cold!” The exaggeration converts the proverb’s measured patience into an absurdly long delay.

Jago Tamlyn’s use of the proverb

Jago follows the joke with a blunt counterfactual: “If I wanted to kill Nathan Oliver he’d have been overboard years ago, same as my granddad was.” He presents the length of the delay, rather than the existence of hostility, as evidence against the accusation. His reference to his grandfather gives the threat a family history, but he frames that history as proof that he would not have waited more than twenty years to act against Oliver.

The proverb as a disputed explanation

Jago’s retort does not settle the question for Kate Miskin. After he leaves, she points to the timing, the choice of an especially unfavorable weekend, and the method as reasons to doubt that he killed Oliver. She also wonders whether he knows the whole story of the lighthouse, including that the boy himself could have started the fire, or whether he is withholding something. The proverb thus sharpens the exchange’s distinction between a persuasive denial and a complete account: Jago turns delayed revenge into an argument, while Kate remains alert to what his explanation leaves unresolved.
